I always lamented not having his records until his CD's recently became available and then I snatched them up. In my previous life, I sang (baritone) and I've always considered John Gary to be a great example of a singer's singer. Anyone who can appreciate appreciate singing that is beautiful rather than edgy owes it to themselves to check him out. His "Danny Boy" is arguably the best ever recorded. I think it takes another singer to fully appreciate how glorious his 3-octave voice was truly was. It was a pity that his career peaked just as his style of romantic concert hall singing was being eclipsed (as was everything else) by the British Invasion.
I had also forgotten what a lovely voice Dennis Day had and though some of the songs are a bit plastic irish as the saying goes, it is generally one of my favorite CD's. This is truly a beautiful CD of Irish Music. John Gary, long a favorite of mine was certainly at his best on this recording.
Funny, sad, you name it, this CD has all the range of Irish music, by the best singers the country offers.
Fortunately, I found it on Amazon. I first heard this CD when my dad (an Irishman) played it for me. I was sold, and had to have my own copy.
All the artists are so talented. I never get tired of listening to this CD. Such beautiful music. Just sit back and close your eyes and you will be swept away to the Emerald Isle.
